Distance Learning

Mrs. Robinson's Learning Pod

Hi! I'm Frankie and, as a former teacher with extensive knowledge on how to make engaging online lessons for students, I'm excited to launch this venture into learning pods. I will be teaching Common Core aligned curriculum with each class full of practice and support. If we are gathering data, the students will survey each other in class! If we are learning about money, we can incorporate some mock eCommerce into our lessons! I will be using NY Engage curriculum as my framework and be sure to share an outline with the grown-ups.

The classes would be on Google Classroom and hosted through Zoom.

Right now, I'm in the process of a job search and am gauging how much interest there is for this service. It would be strictly for this upcoming 2021 spring semester and will be for Math and English.

(For anyone interested in Japanese classes, I can arrange for that as well.)

Math Learning Pod

This learning pod is specifically designed for students in the state of Georgia. We will follow the Georgia curriculum map and standards. However, the standards for Georgia are verbatim the Common Core standards, so I have realigned the robust New York math curriculum to fit in the Georgia curriculum map.

Each 1-hour class will include:

  • Calendar time: Students will continue to build their understanding of time and number sense, such as place value, money, skip counting, and math story problems.

  • Whole group lesson: An interactive online lesson that teaches the main skill.

  • In-Class Practice: The students will have a worksheet completed by the end of each class that showcases the skill taught and learned in that class.

  • Optional Homework: For additional practice, a homework sheet will be assigned in correlation to each lesson taught in class.

What preparation is needed by the grown ups?

  • Please print the In-Class Practice worksheet packet before the first lesson on Monday. Feel free to staple them all together into one week's worth of lessons.

  • Feel free to print the correlating homework packet as well.

How will this class be taught?

  • Each lesson will be slightly different in delivery, but I will do my best to keep the kids smiling and engaged in class. They are, after all, 6 and 7 years old. In the past, this has included hand puppets as guests and incorporating songs to help them remember content.

  • While the whole group lesson will largely taught by me, the students will be the highlight of the "show" during our practice time. Some practice will require that the students pair up in breakout rooms to survey each other or work on a worksheet together, supporting each other. I will of course be making my "rounds" around the class to support and check in. At the end of the practice time, we will always review the content learned from class.

How much and how long is this class?

  • $250 for 16 one-hour lessons
The lessons will be Monday through Thursday from 1pm to 2pm.
(Note that there will be no classes on holidays recognized by the schools.)

English Learning Pod

The English lessons will be a mix of reading, writing, and vocabulary instruction.

How will each one-hour lesson be structured?

  • We will begin each lesson with a read-aloud picture book. We will focus on one book per week with correlating vocabulary. Vocabulary will be introduced on Monday and reinforced through the rest of the week.

  • We will then dive into phonics instruction that will eventually be heavily correlated with REVLOC, the six different types of common syllables. I am well-trained in how to teach phonics and scale my instruction from the introduction of individual letter sounds to the chunking of syllables. Then, students are able to identify multi-syllabic words.

  • Students will be provided with reading passages where they practice their reading fluency. Here, we continue to reinforce their understanding of phonics.

  • We end with each lesson with a journal writing prompt. Once a week, we will share our favorite journal entry with each other and provide peer feedback based on a simple rubric for their writing. (For example, was there punctuation? Finger spacing? Capital letters? Appropriate spelling of sight words?)

What preparation is needed by the grown-ups?

  • Printable worksheets will be provided to align with each set of weekly lessons.

  • Please print the journal entry pages in advance and staple them together so that students have a writing journal.
